Something interesting happens when a business has a great year.
Revenue is up. Profitability is stronger. The owner finally feels like all those years of hard work are paying off.
And naturally, the thought is:
“This is great. Let’s do it again next year.”
Absolutely.
But I would add one more thought:
Don’t waste a great year.
A strong year isn’t just money in the bank. It can become part of the story of what your business is worth.
Buyers Don’t Just Look at Revenue
When I work with business owners preparing for a potential sale, buyers want to understand something beyond this year’s numbers:
Can this performance continue without you?
That is where a great year becomes much more interesting.
Imagine two businesses that both finish 2026 with record profits.
One got there because the owner worked 70 hours a week, personally landed the biggest customers and postponed expenses.
The other got there with a strong team, repeatable processes, diversified customers, and financials that clearly show how the company makes money.
Same great year.
Very different story to a buyer.
Turn a Great Year Into Evidence
We are entering the final months of 2026, and this is an excellent time to look at your business through a buyer’s eyes.
Clean up the financials. Document what drove the growth. Understand your customer concentration. Identify unusual or personal expenses. Strengthen the team around you.
Most importantly, understand whether this year’s success is repeatable.
Because buyers don’t simply pay for what happened.
They pay for their confidence in what can happen next.
And that is one of the biggest differences between having a successful business and building a valuable, transferable one.
You Don’t Have to Be Ready to Sell
This is the part I wish more owners understood.
Preparing your business for a future sale does not mean putting a FOR SALE sign on it tomorrow.
It means creating options.
Maybe you sell in two years. Maybe five. Maybe you pass the business to your children. Maybe you decide you’re having too much fun and keep it.
But if 2026 is becoming one of your best years, use it.
Great years create momentum. Smart owners turn that momentum into value.
And if you’re wondering what your 2026 numbers might mean for your business‘s value, I’d be happy to talk.
